Preparation time:              between 1-3 hrs depending on how many you make

 

Recipe ingredients and directions:

 

6 cups             flour

¼ tsp               salt

3 tsps              baking powder

2 cups             lard or shortening

1-1/2 cups      sugar

2 tsps              anise seeds

2                      eggs

¼ cup              whiskey or brandy

 


¼ cup sugar

1 tbs                cinnamon

 

Sift flour with baking powder and salt.  Cream lard with sugar and anise seeds until fluffy.  Beat in eggs.  Mix in flour mixture and brandy until well blended.  Pat or roll to ½ or ¼ inch thickness.  Cut into shapes.  Bake 10 min or until browned at 350˚.  While still hot toss in sugar and cinnamon mixture, or you can sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar before baking.  Let cool.

Recipe anecdote:   These are the New Mexican Christmas and to me they taste exactly like Christmas!  If you try to substitute shortening for lard they are just not the same, so splurge, Christmas is once a year!  The traditional shape is the fleur-de-lis due to the historic ties between Mexico and France.
