Recipe ingredients and directions:

½ cup brown sugar*

½ cup rolled oats

½ cup flour

1/3 cup soft butter

¾ tsp cinnamon

¾ tsp nutmeg

Slice several apples of your favorite variety into a shallow baking dish.  Combine other ingredients and sprinkle evenly over apples.  Bake 35 minutes at 375°.  Serve warm with ice cream or whipping cream.

*Ellen Moscoe, FAIS class of 1997, strongly prefers very dark molasses sugar, and also adds ¼ cup toasted, chopped almonds.  She often substitutes fresh or frozen (thawed and drained) berries for the apples.  Max Moscoe, FAIS class of 2001, insists on heaps of French vanilla ice cream with his crisp.  Bon appetit!

Recipe source:       I got the recipe from my aunt in Kansas, and have made it for years.  Now, Ellen has adopted it as her own specialty—and makes it for most holidays with a couple of variations.

Recipe anecdote:     This recipe is one of our family favorites—something simple enough for the kids to make, yet melt-in-your-mouth delicious.  It’s also a fast “emergency dessert” for which one usually has all the necessary ingredients on hand.
